Mango Powdery Mildew (Oidium mangiferae)
Mango powdery mildew is a fungal disease that severely affects mango crops, particularly during flowering and fruit set. It spreads rapidly in warm, dry conditions followed by high humidity.
Symptoms:
- White, powdery fungal growth appears on leaves, flowers, and young fruits.
- Infected flowers fail to set fruit, leading to poor yield.
- Young infected fruits drop prematurely or develop deformations.
Management Strategies:
Cultural Control:
- Prune dense canopies to improve airflow and reduce humidity.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen application, which promotes tender growth susceptible to infection.
- Remove and destroy infected plant parts.
Biological Control:
- Use biofungicides like Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus subtilis as preventive sprays.
Chemical Control:
- Preventive Spray: Apply Sulfur-based fungicides (Wettable Sulfur 80%) before flowering.
-
Curative Spray: Use Systemic Fungicides like
- Hexaconazole 5% SC
- Propiconazole 25% EC
- Tebuconazole 25% EC
-
Spray Schedule: Start at flower initiation and repeat every 10-15 days if weather conditions favor the disease.
