Ziram 27% SC is a protective, contact fungicide from the dithiocarbamate chemical class (zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate), registered for use in India under the Insecticides Act, 1968 and sold under various trade names including Syngenta's Cuman, IPL's Ziram and others. It is used mainly on fruit and vegetable crops such as grapes, apple, beans, potato and tomato, applied as a foliar spray against scab, downy mildew, anthracnose and early blight. Ziram remains legally registered and sold in India; always confirm the current pack label before use. This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the recommended crop-wise dosage as per manufacturer labels.

    Mode of Action

Ziram is a multi-site, contact (non-systemic) fungicide. Rather than acting on one specific enzyme, it interferes with several essential metabolic processes inside fungal cells at once — a broad mode of action that makes it harder for fungal populations to develop resistance against it. Because it is not absorbed or translocated within the plant, Ziram remains on the leaf and fruit surface where it is applied, forming a protective barrier that stops fungal spores from germinating and infecting the plant. This means it works purely preventively: it must be applied before disease appears or before rain/humid conditions favour infection, and it does not cure an infection that has already established itself inside plant tissue. As a useful side benefit, Ziram-based products are also known to have a repellent effect on birds and rodents.

    Features & Benefits

    • Broad-spectrum, multi-site protective action against scab, downy mildew, anthracnose and early blight across fruit and vegetable crops.
    • Low resistance risk compared to single-site systemic fungicides, due to its multi-site mode of action — a useful rotation partner in a resistance-management program.
    • Forms a durable protective film on leaf and fruit surfaces, well suited to use ahead of expected rain or humid weather that favours disease outbreaks.
    • Added repellent effect against birds and rodents, offering incidental crop protection beyond fungal disease control.

Recommended Usage of Ziram 27% SC Fungicide

The table below gives the commonly recommended dose and water volume per acre for each crop and target disease, as listed on manufacturer labels for this active ingredient. As a contact fungicide, thorough, uniform coverage of all plant surfaces is essential for good results. Always confirm against the current product label before use.

Crop Target Disease Dose per Acre Water Volume per Acre Waiting Period (PHI)
Grape Downy Mildew, Anthracnose 920–1400 ml 300–400 litres Not specified on label
Apple Scab 920–1400 ml 300–400 litres 21 days
Bean Anthracnose 920–1400 ml 300–400 litres 4 days
Potato Early Blight 920–1400 ml 300–400 litres 3 days
Tomato Early Blight 920–1400 ml 300–400 litres 3 days

Doses above are the commonly listed formulation-label rates for Ziram 27% SC, rounded to practical spray-tank quantities. None of the label sources checked state a numeric waiting period (PHI) for grape, so this has been marked "Not specified on label" rather than estimated. Always confirm the current pack label/CIB registration and consult your local agricultural extension office for the latest guidance before harvest.

    How to Use

    1. Identify your crop and target disease from the table above, and confirm the correct dose per acre.
    2. Shake the container well before use, then measure the required quantity and pre-mix it in a small quantity of water before adding it to the full spray tank volume, stirring continuously for even dispersion.
    3. Spray using a knapsack or power sprayer to achieve thorough, uniform coverage of all leaf and fruit surfaces — since this is a contact fungicide, any unsprayed surface remains unprotected.
    4. Apply preventively, ideally just before an expected disease-favourable period (rain, high humidity, dew), rather than waiting for symptoms to appear.
    5. Repeat sprays at regular intervals as advised by local agricultural extension, particularly during extended wet or humid spells, and always respect the waiting period before harvest.

    Precautions & Safety

    • Wear appropriate PPE — mask/respirator, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying.
    • Do a small jar-compatibility test before tank-mixing with other agrochemicals, and avoid mixing with strongly alkaline materials such as lime or Bordeaux mixture.
    • Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food, feed and out of reach of children and livestock.
    • Because Ziram acts only on the surface it is applied to, ensure spray coverage is repeated after heavy rain that may wash off the protective film.
    • Respect the waiting period (PHI) listed for each crop above before harvesting, and follow your local agricultural extension advice for the latest guidance.
    • Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
