Imidacloprid 17.8% SL is a systemic neonicotinoid insecticide, registered for use in India under the Insecticides Act, 1968, formulated as a soluble liquid (SL). It is registered for a wide range of sucking pests across cotton, paddy, chilli, sugarcane, mango, sunflower, okra, citrus, groundnut, tomato, grapes and tea — including aphids, whiteflies, jassids, thrips, hoppers, termites and leafminers. This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the complete crop-wise recommended dosage as per the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) official list of approved insecticide uses.
Mode of Action
Imidacloprid acts on the insect’s central nervous system as a systemic insecticide, absorbed by the roots or foliage and translocated throughout the plant. It binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the pest’s nerve synapses, causing continuous, uncontrolled nerve stimulation that insects cannot switch off. This leads to paralysis and death of the pest. Because it moves systemically within plant tissue, it protects new growth and controls hidden or hard-to-reach sucking pests, such as those feeding on leaf undersides or inside plant tissue (as with sugarcane termites and citrus leafminer).
Features & Benefits
- Systemic movement within the plant gives long-lasting protection of new growth against sucking pests, including those feeding on leaf undersides.
- Extremely broad crop and pest coverage — registered on field crops, vegetables, fruit crops, plantation crops and ornamentals — for a very wide range of sucking pests.
- Effective against soil-dwelling pests like sugarcane termite as well as foliar pests like aphids, jassids and thrips.
- Soluble liquid (SL) formulation mixes readily and completely into the spray tank.
Recommended Usage of Imidacloprid 17.8% SL Insecticide
The table below gives the recommended dose per acre, converted from the official rate published in the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which is expressed per hectare (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres). Always spray in the recommended water volume for uniform coverage, and confirm against the current product label before use.
| Crop | Target Pest | Formulation per Acre (ml) | Water Volume per Acre | Waiting Period (days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton | Aphid, Whitefly, Jassid, Thrips | 40.5–50.6 | 202.4–283.4 | 40 |
| Paddy (Rice) | Brown plant hopper, White backed plant hopper, Green leafhopper | 40.5–50.6 | 202.4–283.4 | 40 |
| Chilli | Jassid, Aphid, Thrips | 50.6–101.2 | 202.4–283.4 | 40 |
| Sugarcane | Termite | 141.7 | 759.1 | 45 |
| Mango | Hopper | 0.40–0.80 g + 2–4 ml per tree* | 10 litres/tree | 45 |
| Sunflower | Whitefly, Jassid, Thrips | 40.5 | 202.4 | 30 |
| Bhindi (Okra) | Aphid, Jassid, Thrips | 40.5 | 202.4 | 3 |
| Groundnut | Aphid, Jassid | 40.5–50.6 | 202.4 | 40 |
| Tomato | Whitefly | 60.7–70.9 | 202.4 | 3 |
| Tea | Tea mosquito bug | 48.6 | 161.9 | 7 |
Doses above are converted from the official rate published in the CIB&RC’s list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which states the rate per hectare; converted here to a practical per-acre spray-tank quantity (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres) and rounded. The Mango row is a fixed per-tree dose (not converted) as it is registered by tree size rather than area. Always confirm the current dose on your specific product’s label, and consult your local agricultural extension office if in doubt.
How to Use
- Identify your crop and target pest from the table above, and confirm the correct dose and water volume.
- Measure the required quantity of Imidacloprid 17.8% SL and add it to the spray tank half-filled with water, then top up while stirring, since this is a soluble liquid (SL) formulation.
- Apply as a fine, uniform spray covering the entire crop canopy, including leaf undersides where sucking pests congregate; for sugarcane termite, apply as a soil drench near the root zone as per label directions.
- Spray at the first appearance of pest activity or on crossing the economic threshold level, based on field scouting.
- Rotate with insecticides from a different mode-of-action group across the season, as neonicotinoid-resistant populations of several sucking pests are known in parts of India.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear appropriate PPE — mask/respirator, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist.
- Follow the recommended dose strictly; do not mix with other pesticides unless specifically recommended, and never spray during flowering when bees are foraging, as many insecticides are toxic to bees.
- Respect the waiting period (PHI) given in the table above and on the current product label before harvesting the treated crop.
- Spray during calm weather (early morning or late evening), avoiding rain within a few hours of application and high wind that causes spray drift.
- Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
- Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
