Azoxystrobin 4.8% + Chlorothalonil 40% SC is a broad-spectrum, dual-action fungicide combining a systemic strobilurin component with a multi-site protectant, registered for use in India under the Insecticides Act, 1968, formulated as a suspension concentrate (SC). It is registered for the control of leaf spot, downy mildew and powdery mildew on cucurbit crops, and early blight, late blight, powdery mildew and Septoria leaf blight on tomato. This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the complete crop-wise recommended dosage as per the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee's (CIB&RC) official list of approved fungicide uses.
Which Problem Is This For? (Symptom Guide)
Not sure whether what you're seeing in the field matches this fungicide's use case? This guide helps match symptoms to this fungicide's approved crop-wise uses.
| Crop | Other Names | What You'll See in the Field |
|---|---|---|
| Watermelon, Cucumber, Cauliflower | Leaf spot, downy mildew (मृदु रोमिल आसिता) & powdery mildew (भभूतिया रोग). | Angular or irregular brown/necrotic spots on leaves, alongside pale yellow patches with a downy grey-purple fungal growth on the underside (downy mildew) and/or a white to greyish powdery coating on leaf surfaces (powdery mildew); heavily affected leaves yellow, curl and drop early. |
| Tomato | Early blight (अगेती झुलसा), late blight (पछेती झुलसा), powdery mildew (भभूतिया रोग) & Septoria leaf blight. | Dark concentric-ringed spots on lower/older leaves (early blight); water-soaked greyish-brown patches spreading rapidly in cool, humid weather with white fungal growth on the underside (late blight); white powdery coating on leaves (powdery mildew); and numerous small, circular spots with dark margins and pale centres, often bearing tiny black specks (Septoria leaf blight) — all causing progressive leaf yellowing, blighting and premature defoliation. |
Mode of Action
This product combines two complementary modes of action. Azoxystrobin (FRAC Group 11, strobilurin/QoI) is a systemic fungicide with translaminar and acropetal movement within the plant; it inhibits mitochondrial respiration in fungal cells by blocking electron transfer at the cytochrome bc1 complex, giving strong preventive activity and some early-curative action against a broad range of fungal pathogens. Chlorothalonil (FRAC Group M05, chloronitrile) is a multi-site protectant that reacts with multiple enzyme systems in fungal cells, forming a protective barrier on the plant surface that prevents spore germination before infection begins. Pairing a systemic, single-site component with a broad-spectrum multi-site protectant gives both movement within the plant and durable surface protection, while the multi-site partner helps slow the development of resistance against the azoxystrobin component.
Features & Benefits
- Dual-action formulation — a systemic strobilurin component plus a multi-site protectant — giving both preventive and early-curative control across a broad disease spectrum.
- Translaminar and acropetal movement within the plant helps protect new growth and the underside of leaves, not just the sprayed surface.
- The multi-site protectant component (chlorothalonil) is not prone to single-site resistance, which helps slow resistance development against the azoxystrobin component when used as directed.
- Suspension concentrate (SC) formulation that mixes into a stable spray solution for uniform tank application.
Recommended Usage of Azoxystrobin 4.8% + Chlorothalonil 40% SC Fungicide
The table below gives the recommended dose and water volume per acre for watermelon, cucumber, cauliflower and tomato, converted from the official rate published in the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee's (CIB&RC) list of approved fungicide uses (Government of India), which is expressed per hectare (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres). Always spray in the recommended water volume for uniform coverage, and confirm against the current product label before use.
| Crop | Target Disease | Dose per Acre | Water Volume per Acre | Waiting Period (PHI) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Watermelon | Leaf spot, downy mildew & powdery mildew | ~1.2 litres | ~200 litres | 5 days |
| Cucumber | Leaf spot, downy mildew & powdery mildew | ~1.2 litres | ~200 litres | 3 days |
| Cauliflower | Leaf spot & downy mildew | ~1.2 litres | ~200 litres | 3 days |
| Tomato | Early blight, late blight, powdery mildew & Septoria leaf blight | ~1.2 litres | ~200 litres | 3 days |
Doses are converted from the official rate published in the CIB&RC's list of approved fungicide uses (Government of India), which states the rate in litres formulation per hectare; converted here to a practical per-acre spray-tank quantity (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres) and rounded. Always confirm the current dose on your specific product's label, and consult your local agricultural extension office if in doubt.
How to Use
- Identify your crop and target disease from the table above, and confirm the correct dose per acre and water volume.
- Measure the required quantity of Azoxystrobin 4.8% + Chlorothalonil 40% SC and add it to the spray tank partly filled with water, then top up to the required volume while agitating.
- Apply as a fine, uniform spray covering the entire crop canopy, including the underside of leaves where downy mildew and Septoria leaf blight infection typically begins.
- Begin spraying at the first appearance of disease symptoms, or preventively ahead of expected disease pressure during cool, humid weather, since this combination offers both preventive and early-curative action.
- Repeat sprays at 10–14 day intervals if disease pressure continues, or as advised by local agricultural extension, and rotate with fungicides from a different FRAC group to manage the risk of resistance.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear appropriate PPE — mask/respirator, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist.
- Resistance to strobilurin (QoI) chemistry can develop with repeated, exclusive use; always use this product as part of a rotation with fungicides from a different FRAC group, and do not exceed the recommended number of applications per season.
- Follow the recommended dose strictly — both underdosing (poor disease control and greater risk of resistant pathogen populations developing) and overdosing reduce field performance and increase cost.
- Respect the waiting period (PHI) given in the table above and on the current product label before harvesting the treated crop.
- Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
- Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
