Mode of Action
2,4-D belongs to the phenoxy-acetic acid group of herbicides (Group 4, "synthetic auxins"). It is a systemic herbicide, absorbed mainly through the leaves — and to a lesser extent through the roots — of actively growing broadleaf weeds, and it moves throughout the plant via the phloem (the plant's food-transport tissue). It works by mimicking the plant's own natural growth hormone, auxin, but at a far higher and unregulated concentration than the plant can control. This triggers uncontrolled, disorganised cell division and elongation in susceptible broadleaf weeds — causing stems and leaves to twist and curl abnormally (a symptom called epinasty), followed by collapse of the vascular tissue that carries water and nutrients, and death of the plant over one to two weeks. Grasses and cereal crops such as wheat, maize and sugarcane are naturally tolerant because their narrow-leaved growth habit limits herbicide uptake and retention, and they can metabolise (detoxify) 2,4-D faster than broadleaf weeds — this difference is what gives 2,4-D its crop selectivity.

How to Use
- Identify your crop and target weed from the table above, and confirm the correct dose per acre — the dose and water volume differ considerably between crops.
- Since this is a soluble concentrate (SL), the measured dose can be added directly to the spray tank with water and mixed thoroughly — no separate paste-making step is needed as with wettable powders.
- Spray uniformly over the crop when broadleaf weeds are small and actively growing (2–4 leaf stage), as per the timing given for your crop in the table above — spraying weeds at a later, more mature stage significantly reduces effectiveness.
- Use a knapsack or power sprayer fitted with a flat-fan nozzle, and spray during calm weather with no wind — 2,4-D is highly prone to spray drift and vapour drift, and even small amounts reaching neighbouring broadleaf crops (cotton, vegetables, oilseeds, grapes, fruit orchards) can cause severe, visible injury.
