Dinotefuran 20% SG is a neonicotinoid insecticide (IRAC Group 4A) registered for use in India as a systemic and translaminar insecticide, giving effective control of key sucking pests in cotton and paddy. This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the CIB-approved crop-wise recommended dosage.

Mode of Action

Dinotefuran acts on the insect nervous system by binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), causing rapid overstimulation, paralysis and death of the target pest. It is absorbed by roots and leaves and moves systemically within the plant's vascular tissue, giving lasting protection to new growth after application. It also shows strong translaminar movement, passing from the upper to the lower leaf surface, which helps it reach sucking pests such as whitefly and jassids that typically feed and hide on the underside of leaves. Dinotefuran is considered rainfast within about 3 hours of spraying.

Features & Benefits

  • Fast-acting control with quick knockdown of sucking pests soon after application.
  • Combined systemic and translaminar movement gives thorough coverage of the plant, including pests hiding on the underside of leaves.
  • Effective against a broad range of key sucking pests — whitefly, aphids, jassids and thrips in cotton, and Brown Plant Hopper (BPH) in paddy.
  • Rainfast within approximately 3 hours of spraying, reducing the risk of a wasted application if rain follows.
  • A useful IRAC Group 4A option for resistance-management spray rotation programs.

Recommended Usage of Dinotefuran 20% SG Insecticide

The table below gives the CIB-registered dose and water volume per acre for each crop and target pest. Always spray in the recommended water volume for uniform coverage, and confirm against the current product label before use.

Crop Target Pest(s) Dose per Acre Water Volume per Acre Waiting Period (PHI)
Cotton Whitefly, Aphids, Jassids, Thrips 50–60 g 150–200 litres 15 days
Paddy (Rice) Brown Plant Hopper (BPH) 60–80 g 150–200 litres 21 days

Doses above are converted from the official label rate, which is expressed per hectare (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres — cotton: 125–150 g/ha; paddy: 150–200 g/ha), rounded to practical spray-tank quantities. A re-entry interval (REI) of approximately 24 hours is specified on the label. Always confirm the current pack label/CIB registration before use, and do not use on crops not listed on the approved label.

How to Use

  1. Identify your crop and target pest from the table above, and confirm the correct dose per acre before mixing.
  2. First dissolve the required quantity of Dinotefuran 20% SG in a small amount of water to make a smooth solution, then add this gradually into the full spray tank volume while stirring continuously for uniform mixing.
  3. Spray using a knapsack or power sprayer fitted with a flat-fan nozzle for even coverage of both leaf surfaces, preferably during the early morning or late evening.
  4. Avoid spraying during peak bee-foraging hours or when crops are in flower, and avoid application in hot, windy conditions or when rain is expected within a few hours.
  5. Repeat only as needed based on pest monitoring and local agricultural extension advice, rotating with an insecticide from a different IRAC group to manage resistance, and always respect the waiting period before harvest.

Precautions & Safety

  • Wear appropriate PPE — mask, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist or dust while opening the pack.
  • Dinotefuran is a neonicotinoid and can be highly toxic to honeybees and other pollinators — do not spray on flowering crops during active bee-foraging hours, and avoid drift onto neighbouring flowering plants.
  • Observe the specified re-entry interval (REI) of approximately 24 hours before re-entering a treated field without PPE.
  • As a Group 4A neonicotinoid, repeated use can lead to resistance in target pest populations — follow an IRAC "window" rotation strategy, limiting Group 4A products to roughly half of the pest generations sprayed per season, and rotate with insecticides from a different mode-of-action group.
  • Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
  • Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
