Thiamethoxam 25% WG is a neonicotinoid insecticide (IRAC Group 4A) registered for use in India as a systemic and translaminar insecticide, giving broad-spectrum control of sucking pests, borers and certain other insects across a wide range of field and vegetable crops. This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the CIB-approved crop-wise recommended dosage.

Mode of Action

Thiamethoxam acts on the insect's central nervous system by binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), causing continuous nerve stimulation that leads to paralysis and death of the target pest. It is readily absorbed by roots and foliage and moves systemically throughout the plant's vascular tissue, giving protection to new growth after application; it also shows translaminar movement, passing through leaf tissue to reach pests feeding on the underside of leaves. This dual movement makes it effective both as a foliar spray on standing crops and, in other formulations, as a seed treatment (this 25% WG pack is intended for foliar spray use, not seed treatment).

Features & Benefits

  • Broad-spectrum control of key sucking pests and borers across cereals, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, fruit and plantation crops.
  • Combined systemic and translaminar movement gives thorough plant coverage, including pests on the underside of leaves and newly emerged growth.
  • Fast onset of action with good residual/persistent control between sprays.
  • Wide label coverage lets a single product address several crops and pests across a farm's cropping cycle.
  • A useful IRAC Group 4A option for resistance-management spray rotation programs, subject to the same-group usage limits noted below.

Recommended Usage of Thiamethoxam 25% WG Insecticide

The table below gives the CIB-registered dose and water volume per acre for each crop and target pest. Always spray in the recommended water volume for uniform coverage, and confirm against the current product label before use. (This 25% WG formulation is for foliar spray only — seed-treatment dosing applies to separate FS/WS formulations of thiamethoxam and does not apply to this pack.)

Doses above are converted from the official label rate, which is expressed per hectare (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres), rounded to practical spray-tank quantities, and cross-checked across manufacturer labels for this technical. Thiamethoxam 25% WG is highly toxic to honeybees — avoid spraying on flowering crops during active bee-foraging hours. Always confirm the current pack label/CIB registration before use.

How to Use

  1. Identify your crop and target pest from the table above, and confirm the correct dose per acre — doses and waiting periods vary significantly by crop.
  2. First dissolve the required quantity of Thiamethoxam 25% WG in a small amount of water to make a smooth solution, then add this gradually into the full spray tank volume while stirring continuously for uniform mixing.
  3. Spray using a knapsack or power sprayer fitted with a flat-fan nozzle for even coverage of both leaf surfaces, preferably during the early morning or late evening.
  4. Avoid spraying during peak bee-foraging hours or when crops are in flower, and avoid application in hot, windy conditions or when rain is expected within a few hours.
  5. Rotate with an insecticide from a different IRAC group between successive sprays or generations of the pest to manage resistance, and always respect the waiting period before harvest.

Precautions & Safety

  • Wear appropriate PPE — mask, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist or dust while opening the pack.
  • Thiamethoxam is a neonicotinoid and is highly toxic to honeybees and other pollinators — do not spray on flowering crops during active bee-foraging hours, and avoid drift onto neighbouring flowering plants.
  • As a Group 4A neonicotinoid, repeated use can lead to resistance in target pest populations — follow an IRAC "window" rotation strategy, limiting Group 4A products to roughly half of the pest generations sprayed per season, and rotate with insecticides from a different mode-of-action group.
  • This 25% WG pack is intended for foliar spray application only — do not use it as a seed treatment; seed-treatment dosing applies to separate thiamethoxam FS/WS formulations.
  • Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
  • Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
