Lambda Cyhalothrin 4.9% CS is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, registered for use in India under the Insecticides Act, 1968, formulated as a capsule suspension (CS). It is registered for a wide range of crops including cotton, paddy, brinjal, okra, tomato, grapes, chilli, soybean and cardamom, targeting bollworms, stem borer, leaf folder, fruit borers, thrips, flea beetle, pod borer, stem fly, semilooper and shoot/capsule borer. This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the complete crop-wise recommended dosage as per the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) official list of approved insecticide uses.
Mode of Action
Lambda cyhalothrin acts on the insect’s nervous system as a fast-acting contact and stomach poison. It binds to voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cell membranes, keeping them open longer than normal and causing repeated, uncontrolled nerve impulses that lead to tremors, paralysis (knockdown) and death of the target pest. The capsule suspension (CS) formulation encapsulates the active ingredient in tiny microcapsules that release it gradually after spraying, giving longer residual activity on the leaf surface than a conventional EC formulation.
Features & Benefits
- Very broad crop and pest coverage — registered on cotton, paddy, vegetables, grapes, soybean and cardamom — for both bollworm/fruit borer complexes and sucking pests like thrips.
- Fast knockdown action gives quick, visible control of actively feeding larvae.
- Capsule suspension (CS) formulation releases the active ingredient gradually, extending residual leaf protection compared to conventional sprays.
- Well-established, cost-effective pyrethroid chemistry widely used across field, vegetable and plantation crops.
Recommended Usage of Lambda Cyhalothrin 4.9% CS Insecticide
The table below gives the recommended dose per acre, converted from the official rate published in the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which is expressed per hectare (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres). Always spray in the recommended water volume for uniform coverage, and confirm against the current product label before use.
| Crop | Target Pest | Formulation per Acre (ml) | Water Volume per Acre | Waiting Period (days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton | Bollworms | 202.4 | 202.4 | 21 |
| Paddy (Rice) | Stem borer, Leaf folder | 101.2 | 202.4 | 15 |
| Brinjal | Shoot & fruit borer | 121.5 | 202.4 | 5 |
| Bhindi (Okra) | Fruit borer | 121.5 | 202.4 | 5 |
| Tomato | Fruit borer | 121.5 | 202.4 | 5 |
| Grapes | Thrips & Flea beetle | 101.2 | 202.4–404.9 | 7 |
| Chilli | Thrips, Pod borer | 202.4 | 202.4 | 5 |
| Soybean | Stem fly, Semilooper | 121.5 | 202.4 | 31 |
| Cardamom | Shoot & Capsule borer, Thrips | 161.9 | 404.9 | 34 |
Doses above are converted from the official rate published in the CIB&RC’s list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which states the rate per hectare; converted here to a practical per-acre spray-tank quantity (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres) and rounded. Always confirm the current dose on your specific product’s label, and consult your local agricultural extension office if in doubt.
How to Use
- Identify your crop and target pest from the table above, and confirm the correct dose and water volume.
- Measure the required quantity of Lambda Cyhalothrin 4.9% CS and add it to the spray tank half-filled with water, then top up while stirring, since this is a capsule suspension (CS) formulation.
- Apply as a fine, uniform spray covering the entire crop canopy, including leaf undersides and fruiting points where borers and sucking pests concentrate.
- Spray at the first appearance of pest activity or on crossing the economic threshold level, based on field scouting.
- Rotate with insecticides from a different mode-of-action group across the season, as pyrethroid-resistant populations of several bollworm and hopper species are known in India.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear appropriate PPE — mask/respirator, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist.
- Follow the recommended dose strictly; do not mix with other pesticides unless specifically recommended, and never spray during flowering when bees are foraging, as many insecticides are toxic to bees.
- Respect the waiting period (PHI) given in the table above and on the current product label before harvesting the treated crop.
- Spray during calm weather (early morning or late evening), avoiding rain within a few hours of application and high wind that causes spray drift.
- Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
- Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
