Chlorantraniliprole 8.8% + Thiamethoxam 17.5% SC is a combination insecticide pairing an anthranilic diamide (chlorantraniliprole) with a neonicotinoid (thiamethoxam), registered for use in India under the Insecticides Act, 1968, formulated as a suspension concentrate (SC) for use as a soil drench rather than a foliar spray. It is registered for control of leaf miner, whitefly and fruit borer in tomato (applied as a soil drench after transplanting), and stem borer, leaf folder and green leaf hopper in rice nursery (applied before transplanting). This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the recommended dosage as per the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) official list of approved insecticide uses.
Mode of Action
This combination product acts through two complementary systemic mechanisms, both taken up by the roots after a soil drench and moved through the plant. Chlorantraniliprole activates ryanodine receptors in the muscle cells of chewing pests, causing uncontrolled calcium release, rapid feeding cessation and paralysis. Thiamethoxam binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the nervous system of sucking pests, causing continuous, uncontrolled nerve stimulation, paralysis and death. Because both actives move systemically within the plant from a single root-zone application, the treated plant carries protection against both chewing and sucking pests through its early, most vulnerable growth stage.
Features & Benefits
- Single soil-drench application at transplanting gives weeks of systemic protection, reducing the need for repeated foliar sprays during early crop establishment.
- Dual mode of action controls both chewing pests (leaf miner, fruit borer, stem borer, leaf folder) and sucking pests (whitefly, green leaf hopper) from one treatment.
- Protects the most vulnerable early growth stage of the crop — newly transplanted tomato seedlings and rice nursery — when pest damage has the greatest impact on establishment.
- Reduces spray-related labour and exposure compared to repeated foliar applications during the nursery/early transplant stage.
Recommended Usage of Chlorantraniliprole 8.8% + Thiamethoxam 17.5% SC Insecticide
The table below gives the CIB&RC-recommended soil-drench dose exactly as published in the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India). Because this is a root-zone soil drench rather than a foliar spray diluted per acre, the dose is given per plant (tomato) or per hectare of nursery area (rice), not converted to a spray-tank quantity. Always confirm against the current product label before use.
| Crop | Target Pest | Soil-Drench Dose | Water Volume per Acre | Waiting Period (days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tomato | Leaf miner, Whitefly, Fruit borer | 50–100 ml/plant as soil drench (single application, 8–10 days after transplanting) | 36 | |
| Rice Nursery | Stem borer, Leaf folder, Green leaf hopper | 100 L/ha as soil drench (single application, at sowing to before transplanting) | 116 | |
The doses above are shown exactly as published in the CIB&RC’s list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India) because this is a root-zone soil-drench application, not a foliar spray, so it is not converted to a per-acre spray-tank quantity. The tomato dose is applied per plant and the rice nursery dose per hectare of nursery area (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres); scale the rice nursery quantity to your actual nursery area. Always confirm the current dose on your specific product’s label, and consult your local agricultural extension office if in doubt.
How to Use
- Identify your crop and confirm the correct soil-drench dose from the table above.
- For tomato, prepare the drench solution and apply 50–100 ml per plant at the base of the stem as a single application 8–10 days after transplanting, ensuring the soil is moist so the solution reaches the root zone.
- For rice nursery, apply the diluted solution uniformly to the nursery bed as a single drench at sowing time, before transplanting, following the per-hectare rate scaled to your nursery area.
- Avoid drenching during waterlogged or very dry soil conditions, as both reduce uniform root uptake of the active ingredients.
- Because this is a systemic soil application rather than a contact spray, do not expect immediate visible knockdown — protection builds up over the following days as the plant takes up the active ingredients.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear appropriate PPE — mask/respirator, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist.
- Follow the recommended dose strictly; do not mix with other pesticides unless specifically recommended, and never spray during flowering when bees are foraging, as many insecticides are toxic to bees.
- Respect the waiting period (PHI) given in the table above and on the current product label before harvesting the treated crop.
- Spray during calm weather (early morning or late evening), avoiding rain within a few hours of application and high wind that causes spray drift.
- Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
- Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
