Chlorpyrifos 50% + Cypermethrin 5% EC is a combination insecticide pairing an organophosphate (chlorpyrifos) with a synthetic pyrethroid (cypermethrin), registered for use in India under the Insecticides Act, 1968, formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate (EC). It is registered across cotton, paddy, brinjal, cabbage and okra (bhindi) for sucking pests (aphid, jassid, thrips, whitefly) as well as chewing/boring pests (bollworm complex, Spodoptera, stem borer, leaf folder, shoot & fruit borer and diamond back moth). This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the complete crop-wise recommended dosage as per the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) official list of approved insecticide uses.
Mode of Action
This combination product acts through two complementary nerve-poisoning mechanisms. Chlorpyrifos inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, causing the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to build up at nerve junctions and leading to continuous, uncontrolled nerve firing. Cypermethrin binds to voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve membranes, keeping them open abnormally long and causing repeated nerve impulses. Together, the two active ingredients disrupt the pest’s nervous system at two different sites, giving fast knockdown along with a broader spectrum of pest coverage than either active alone.
Features & Benefits
- Very broad-spectrum action from a dual mode of action — controls sucking pests (aphid, jassid, thrips, whitefly) and chewing/boring pests (bollworm, stem borer, fruit borer, diamond back moth) from one spray.
- Fast knockdown from the pyrethroid component combined with the longer-lasting organophosphate action.
- Registered across five major crops (cotton, paddy, brinjal, cabbage, okra), useful for farms growing a mix of these crops.
- Well-established, cost-effective combination chemistry with a long field track record.
Recommended Usage of Chlorpyrifos 50% + Cypermethrin 5% EC Insecticide
The table below gives the recommended dose per acre, converted from the official rate published in the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which is expressed per hectare (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres). Always spray in the recommended water volume for uniform coverage, and confirm against the current product label before use.
| Crop | Target Pest | Formulation per Acre (ml) | Water Volume per Acre | Waiting Period (days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton | Aphid, Jassids, Thrips, Whitefly, Spodoptera litura, Spotted/Pink/American bollworm | 404.9 | 202.4–404.9 | 15 |
| Rice (Paddy) | Stem borer, Leaf folder | 253–303.6 | 202.4–283.4 | 15 |
| Brinjal | Shoot & fruit borer | 404.9 | 202.4 | 7 |
| Cabbage | Diamond back moth | 303.6 | 202.4 | 5 |
| Bhindi (Okra) | Fruit borer | 404.9 | 202.4 | 10 |
Doses above are converted from the official rate published in the CIB&RC’s list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which states the rate per hectare; converted here to a practical per-acre spray-tank quantity (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres) and rounded. Always confirm the current dose on your specific product’s label, and consult your local agricultural extension office if in doubt.
How to Use
- Identify your crop and target pest from the table above, and confirm the correct dose and water volume.
- Measure the required quantity of Chlorpyrifos 50% + Cypermethrin 5% EC and add it to the spray tank half-filled with water, then top up while stirring, since this is an emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation.
- Apply as a fine, uniform spray covering the entire crop canopy, including leaf undersides and fruiting/boring points where the target pests concentrate.
- Spray at the first appearance of pest activity or on crossing the economic threshold level, based on field scouting.
- Rotate with insecticides from a different mode-of-action group across the season to manage the risk of resistance in bollworm and hopper populations.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear appropriate PPE — mask/respirator, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist.
- Follow the recommended dose strictly; do not mix with other pesticides unless specifically recommended, and never spray during flowering when bees are foraging, as many insecticides are toxic to bees.
- Respect the waiting period (PHI) given in the table above and on the current product label before harvesting the treated crop.
- Spray during calm weather (early morning or late evening), avoiding rain within a few hours of application and high wind that causes spray drift.
- Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
- Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
