Chlorantraniliprole 35% WG is an anthranilic diamide insecticide, registered for use in India under the Insecticides Act, 1968, formulated as a water-dispersible granule (WG). It is registered for the control of fruit borer in okra (bhindi) and tomato. This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the recommended dosage as per the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) official list of approved insecticide uses.
Mode of Action
Chlorantraniliprole activates ryanodine receptors in the insect’s muscle cells, causing uncontrolled release and depletion of stored calcium. This leads to rapid impairment of muscle regulation, feeding cessation within hours of ingestion, paralysis and death of the target larva. Because ryanodine receptors in insects are far more sensitive to this action than those in mammals and birds, it gives strong pest control at low use rates. Feeding stops very quickly after exposure, limiting further crop damage even before the larva dies.
Features & Benefits
- Very fast feeding cessation — larvae stop feeding within hours of ingesting treated plant tissue, limiting further fruit damage.
- Novel ryanodine-receptor mode of action makes it a valuable rotation partner against fruit borer populations resistant to older insecticide groups.
- Water-dispersible granule (WG) formulation is easy to measure, mix and store.
- Effective at low use rates due to high target-site selectivity for insect ryanodine receptors.
Recommended Usage of Chlorantraniliprole 35% WG Insecticide
The table below gives the recommended dose per acre, converted from the official rate published in the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which is expressed per hectare (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres). Always spray in the recommended water volume for uniform coverage, and confirm against the current product label before use.
| Crop | Target Pest | Formulation per Acre (gm) | Water Volume per Acre | Waiting Period (days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bhindi (Okra) | Fruit borer (Helicoverpa armigera & Earias vittella) | 28.7 | 202.4 | 5 |
| Tomato | Fruit borer (Helicoverpa armigera) | 34.8 | 202.4 | 3 |
Doses above are converted from the official rate published in the CIB&RC’s list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which states the rate per hectare; converted here to a practical per-acre spray-tank quantity (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres) and rounded. Always confirm the current dose on your specific product’s label, and consult your local agricultural extension office if in doubt.
How to Use
- Identify your crop and confirm the correct dose and water volume from the table above.
- Measure the required quantity of Chlorantraniliprole 35% WG and add it to the spray tank half-filled with water, then stir to form a uniform suspension, since this is a water-dispersible granule (WG) formulation.
- Apply as a fine, uniform spray covering the entire crop canopy, focusing on flowers and developing fruit where the borer larvae bore in.
- Spray at the first sign of egg-laying or freshly bored fruit, based on regular field scouting.
- Rotate with insecticides from a different mode-of-action group across the season to manage the risk of resistance in fruit borer populations.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear appropriate PPE — mask/respirator, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist.
- Follow the recommended dose strictly; do not mix with other pesticides unless specifically recommended, and never spray during flowering when bees are foraging, as many insecticides are toxic to bees.
- Respect the waiting period (PHI) given in the table above and on the current product label before harvesting the treated crop.
- Spray during calm weather (early morning or late evening), avoiding rain within a few hours of application and high wind that causes spray drift.
- Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
- Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
