Novaluron 5.25% + Indoxacarb 4.5% SC is a combination insecticide pairing an insect growth regulator (novaluron) with an oxadiazine (indoxacarb), registered for use in India under the Insecticides Act, 1968, formulated as a suspension concentrate (SC). It is registered across tomato, chickpea, soybean, pigeonpea (arhar/tur), chilli and blackgram for control of major pod borer and fruit borer complexes, including Helicoverpa armigera and Spodoptera species. This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the complete crop-wise recommended dosage as per the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) official list of approved insecticide uses.
Mode of Action
This combination product works through two different mechanisms that reinforce each other. Novaluron is an insect growth regulator that inhibits chitin synthesis, preventing larvae from forming a new cuticle properly at each moult; affected larvae die during moulting or fail to develop normally. Indoxacarb, after being activated inside the insect, blocks sodium channels in nerve cells, which stops nerve impulses, causing the pest to become paralysed, stop feeding and die. Because indoxacarb requires metabolic activation inside the insect, it is more selective toward target pests than many older sodium-channel poisons.
Features & Benefits
- Two different modes of action (growth regulation plus nerve-channel blocking) give robust control of pod/fruit borer complexes and help delay resistance development.
- Indoxacarb component causes rapid feeding cessation, limiting crop damage even before larvae die.
- Novaluron component disrupts larval development at the moult, giving control that extends beyond the day of spraying.
- Registered across six major pulse, oilseed and vegetable crops, covering the pod/fruit borer complex common to all of them.
Recommended Usage of Novaluron 5.25% + Indoxacarb 4.5% SC Insecticide
The table below gives the recommended dose per acre, converted from the official rate published in the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which is expressed per hectare (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres). Always spray in the recommended water volume for uniform coverage, and confirm against the current product label before use.
| Crop | Target Pest | Formulation per Acre (ml) | Water Volume per Acre | Waiting Period (days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tomato | Fruit borer (Helicoverpa armigera) & Leaf eating caterpillar (Spodoptera litura) | 334–354.3 | 202.4 | 5 |
| Chickpea | Gram pod borer (Helicoverpa armigera) | 334–354.3 | 202.4 | 9 |
| Soybean | Spodoptera spp., Helicoverpa armigera and Semilooper | 334–354.3 | 202.4 | 14 |
| Pigeonpea (Arhar/Tur) | Pod borer complex | 334–354.3 | 202.4 | 25 |
| Chilli | Fruit borer complex | 334–354.3 | 202.4 | 7 |
| Blackgram | Pod borer complex | 334–354.3 | 202.4 | 14 |
Doses above are converted from the official rate published in the CIB&RC’s list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which states the rate per hectare; converted here to a practical per-acre spray-tank quantity (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres) and rounded. Always confirm the current dose on your specific product’s label, and consult your local agricultural extension office if in doubt.
How to Use
- Identify your crop and confirm the correct dose and water volume from the table above.
- Measure the required quantity of Novaluron 5.25% + Indoxacarb 4.5% SC and add it to the spray tank half-filled with water, then stir to form a uniform suspension, since this is a suspension concentrate (SC) formulation.
- Apply as a fine, uniform spray covering the entire crop canopy, focusing on flowers and developing pods/fruit where borer larvae feed and bore in.
- Spray at the first sign of egg-laying or early larval feeding, based on regular field scouting, since the growth-regulator component works best on young larvae.
- Rotate with insecticides from a different mode-of-action group across the season to manage resistance in Helicoverpa and Spodoptera populations.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear appropriate PPE — mask/respirator, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist.
- Follow the recommended dose strictly; do not mix with other pesticides unless specifically recommended, and never spray during flowering when bees are foraging, as many insecticides are toxic to bees.
- Respect the waiting period (PHI) given in the table above and on the current product label before harvesting the treated crop.
- Spray during calm weather (early morning or late evening), avoiding rain within a few hours of application and high wind that causes spray drift.
- Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
- Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
