Flonicamid 50% WG is a selective, systemic insecticide of the pyridinecarboxamide group, registered for use in India under the Insecticides Act, 1968, formulated as a water-dispersible granule (WG). It is registered for a wide range of sucking pests — plant hoppers, aphids, jassids, thrips and whitefly — across rice, cotton, okra, brinjal, mango, tomato, chilli, soybean and potato. This page lists its mode of action, key benefits and the complete crop-wise recommended dosage as per the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) official list of approved insecticide uses.
Mode of Action
Flonicamid works selectively on the feeding behaviour of sucking pests rather than by direct nerve poisoning. It disrupts the insect’s stylet penetration and probing behaviour, causing sucking pests to stop feeding on the plant’s phloem within a short time of exposure. Because feeding stops almost immediately, transmission of plant viruses by aphids and hoppers is reduced, and further sap loss and honeydew-related sooty mould development are curbed, even though the pest may take longer to die than with fast-knockdown insecticides.
Features & Benefits
- Rapid feeding cessation in sucking pests reduces virus transmission and honeydew/sooty mould buildup quickly after application.
- Highly selective mode of action makes it gentle on many natural enemies and pollinators compared to broad-spectrum insecticides, when used as per label directions.
- Systemic movement in the plant gives protection to new growth against aphids, jassids, thrips and whitefly.
- Very broad crop registration — covering cereals, fibre, vegetable and fruit crops — for consistent sucking-pest management across a farm’s cropping mix.
Recommended Usage of Flonicamid 50% WG Insecticide
The table below gives the recommended dose per acre, converted from the official rate published in the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee’s (CIB&RC) list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which is expressed per hectare (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres). Always spray in the recommended water volume for uniform coverage, and confirm against the current product label before use.
| Crop | Target Pest | Formulation per Acre (gm) | Water Volume per Acre | Waiting Period (days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rice | Brown plant hopper, White backed plant hopper, Green leaf hopper | 60.7 | 202.4 | 36 |
| Cotton | Aphids, Jassids, Thrips & Whiteflies | 60.7 | 202.4 | 25 |
| Bhindi (Okra) | Aphids, Jassids, Whitefly | 81 | 202.4 | 10 |
| Brinjal | Aphids, Jassids, Whitefly | 81 | 202.4 | 15 |
| Mango | Mango hoppers | 161.9 | 404.9 | 15 |
| Tomato | Aphids, Jassids, Whitefly | 81 | 202.4 | 5 |
| Chilli | Aphids, Jassids, Whitefly | 81 | 202.4 | 5 |
| Soybean | Aphids, Jassids, Whitefly | 81 | 202.4 | 35 |
| Potato | Aphids, Jassids, Whitefly | 81 | 202.4 | 20 |
Doses above are converted from the official rate published in the CIB&RC’s list of approved insecticide uses (Government of India), which states the rate per hectare; converted here to a practical per-acre spray-tank quantity (1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres) and rounded. Always confirm the current dose on your specific product’s label, and consult your local agricultural extension office if in doubt.
How to Use
- Identify your crop and target pest from the table above, and confirm the correct dose and water volume.
- Measure the required quantity of Flonicamid 50% WG and add it to the spray tank half-filled with water, then stir to form a uniform suspension, since this is a water-dispersible granule (WG) formulation.
- Apply as a fine, uniform spray covering the entire crop canopy, including leaf undersides and new flush where sucking pests concentrate.
- Spray at the first appearance of pest activity or on crossing the economic threshold level, based on field scouting.
- Rotate with insecticides from a different mode-of-action group across the season as part of a resistance-management programme.
Precautions & Safety
- Wear appropriate PPE — mask/respirator, gloves, goggles and full-sleeved clothing — while mixing and spraying, and avoid inhaling spray mist.
- Follow the recommended dose strictly; do not mix with other pesticides unless specifically recommended, and never spray during flowering when bees are foraging, as many insecticides are toxic to bees.
- Respect the waiting period (PHI) given in the table above and on the current product label before harvesting the treated crop.
- Spray during calm weather (early morning or late evening), avoiding rain within a few hours of application and high wind that causes spray drift.
- Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, food and feed, and out of reach of children and livestock.
- Wash hands, face and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling or spraying, and change out of contaminated clothing before eating, drinking or smoking.
